24-hour care vs. live-in care — what’s the difference?

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different care arrangements with different levels of overnight coverage.

24-hour care — continuous rotating shift coverage

  • Multiple caregivers work in shifts — typically 8 or 12 hours each
  • Someone is always awake and alert, day and night
  • No sleep periods — full active coverage at all times
  • Best for higher-need clients requiring frequent overnight assistance
  • Caregivers go home at the end of their shift

Best for: Seniors with dementia, fall risk, frequent overnight needs, or post-hospital recovery requiring close supervision

Live-in care — one caregiver resides in the home

  • A single caregiver lives in the client’s home
  • Provides daytime support and is available overnight if needed
  • Caregiver is entitled to a sleep period — typically 6–8 hours
  • Offers consistency and a closer caregiver-client relationship
  • Generally more cost-effective than rotating shift care

Best for: Seniors who need consistent daily support and occasional overnight help but do not require someone awake all night

When is around-the-clock care the right choice?

Families often reach the point of needing 24-hour or live-in care gradually. Common situations include:

  • A loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia who wanders, becomes confused at night, or cannot safely be left alone
  • Recovery from a major surgery, stroke, or serious illness where continuous monitoring is needed
  • A senior with significant fall risk, limited mobility, or who needs help with transfers throughout the day and night
  • A family caregiver who is burning out and needs full relief — not just a few hours
  • A senior living alone whose family lives out of state and cannot be present regularly
  • An individual approaching end of life who wants to remain home and needs consistent, compassionate support

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 24-hour care and live-in care?

24-hour care uses rotating caregivers working scheduled shifts so that someone is always awake and available — day and night, with no gaps in coverage. Live-in care involves a single caregiver residing in the home who is available throughout the day and overnight as needed, but who is entitled to a sleep period of around six to eight hours. The right choice depends on how frequently your loved one needs assistance overnight and the overall level of supervision required.

Who typically needs 24-hour or live-in care?

Seniors who are at significant risk of falls, have Alzheimer’s or dementia, require frequent overnight assistance, are recovering from a major illness or surgery, or who cannot safely remain alone for any extended period often benefit most from around-the-clock care.

Can my loved one stay home instead of moving to assisted living or a memory care facility?

In many cases, yes — and for many families this is the preferred outcome. Around-the-clock in-home care can provide a comparable level of supervision and support to residential facilities, while allowing your loved one to remain in familiar surroundings with one-on-one attention.

How quickly can 24-hour or live-in care be arranged?

Collier Home Care works to match families with caregivers as quickly as possible. In many cases, care can be arranged within a short timeframe — including for urgent situations following a hospital discharge or sudden change in condition. Call us at (239) 920-3902 to discuss your timeline.

Is 24-hour home care available in Naples and surrounding communities?
