What is hospice care support?

Hospice is a Medicare-certified medical program provided by a licensed hospice agency, focused on comfort and quality of life for individuals with a terminal illness. It includes nursing visits, physician oversight, social work, chaplain services, and other clinical support managed by the hospice team.

What Collier Home Care provides is different — and complementary. We refer experienced independent caregivers who provide non-medical personal care and companionship alongside the hospice program already in place. Many families find that hospice visits alone — typically a few hours a week — are not enough to cover the full range of daily support their loved one needs at home. A personal caregiver fills that gap.

How our caregivers work alongside hospice

Caregivers referred through Collier Home Care focus on comfort, dignity, and presence. Their role is to help your loved one feel cared for and never alone, while supporting the family through an extraordinary time.

Personal care & comfort

Gentle assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, and hygiene — always performed with dignity and respect.

Mobility & positioning

Helping with safe repositioning, transfers, and comfortable positioning to prevent discomfort and pressure concerns.

Meals & hydration

Preparing light meals, offering fluids, and gently encouraging nourishment in a way that respects your loved one’s wishes.

Companionship & presence

Simply being present — talking, reading, sitting quietly, or holding a hand. Human presence matters profoundly at this time.

Overnight & respite support

Overnight coverage so family members can sleep, and relief during the day so caregivers can rest and recharge.

Household support

Light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation for family members, and keeping the home calm and comfortable.

A note on our referral model: Collier Home Care is a caregiver referral agency, not a hospice provider. We refer experienced independent caregivers who work alongside your existing hospice program. If you do not yet have a hospice program in place, your physician or hospital can provide a referral to a licensed hospice agency in Southwest Florida. Once hospice is established, we can help arrange complementary personal care support.

No. Collier Home Care is a caregiver referral agency. We refer experienced independent caregivers who provide non-medical personal care and companionship support alongside an established hospice program. Hospice itself — including nursing, physician care, medications, and clinical support — is provided by a licensed hospice agency. Our caregivers complement that program by covering the daily personal care and presence needs that hospice visits alone do not fully address.

Why do families need a personal caregiver if hospice is already in place?

Hospice programs typically involve nursing visits a few times a week, supplemented by on-call phone support. They are not designed to provide daily personal care or a continuous presence in the home. Many families find that their loved one needs more hands-on assistance and companionship than the hospice schedule provides — help with bathing, meals, mobility, and simply having someone present through the night or during the day. What qualities should I look for in a hospice support caregiver?

Patience, gentleness, emotional steadiness, and genuine compassion are the most important qualities at this stage of care.
