A strong social life has been linked with many health benefits, such as a reduced risk of depression and longer life span. A recent Harvard study found that older adults who interacted with people beyond their usual social circle of family and close friends were more likely to have higher levels of physical activity, greater positive moods, and fewer negative feelings. Southwest Florida is known for having a vibrant senior citizen scene that is full of activities and opportunities to connect with others.
Finding a space that you can visit frequently helps solidify bonds and creates sense a routine and community. Senior centers and local library branches are excellent resources. From fitness and gardening to education, crafting and games there are many opportunities for seniors in our area to socialize and engage in hobbies.
Meeting new friends and trying new experiences by joining local meetup groups is another a way to expand your social circle and explore Southwest Florida. If you aren’t able to venture out, or want to ease into a new hobby— virtual classes are also a way to connect with others without having to leave the house. For all events and programs, be sure to confirm availability and RSVP ahead of time.
